SUPing, SURFing, Tacos's, Cerveza's and Sharks in Sayulita, MX

For the past couple years, my girlfriend Rachel and I have been heading south to Sayulita, MX in January for a short vacation to get away from the winters chill. Sayulita has a pretty mellow surf break for aspiring Surfers or Stand Up Paddle borders. Just the ticket for us. The break can sometimes get pretty big, so keep an eye on the surf report.

This year we decided to bring along an inflatable SUP board. We got the C4XXL from Colorado Kayak Supply. The C4 XXL is ideal for any paddler wanting incredible stability out of a inflatable SUP. Designed for riders up to 250 lbs. This extra wide inflatable stand up board is perfect for beginners and big boys. But also performs and paddles really well for smaller framed people. The 34-inch width gives it both extra volume and provides a very stable ride. It comes complete with unbreakable thruster fins, deck pad, pump and travel bag. This is the one that anyone will have fun with. On the ocean, lakes or rivers of your choice.
I was pretty excited. The board came up in a nice package and we checked it onto the plane. We also took our own 2-piece SUP paddles. The C4 iSup comes with a nice bag to carry it around and we just walked to the beach with it and pumped it up. pretty darn easy.

I have been Stand Up Paddle Boarding for a little over a year now. I'm pretty decent on our local lakes and mellow rivers. So I basically thought that I would kill it on the ocean. Catch waves, do cutbacks, cruise around, look good, etc. Wrong! I totally sucked. I had a hard time even standing up. I was watching rank beginners cruising all over, some of them even catching waves, I was in disbelief. My girlfriend was awesome, loving the board and going up and down the beach. She would then give the board to me and laugh hysterically as I tumbled off over and over.
I finally figured out what was wrong. I have a morbid fear of sharks (don't worry, there are none in Sayulita). Every time I would stand up on the board, I would look around at the vast ocean surrounding me, gulp, look down into the dark deep depths and start to shake. I would shake myself right off the board and into awaiting huge serrated jaws of death. I would hit the water, panic, fly prone back onto the board like something wet sprung from a slingshot and pant and pant!

So I stuck to surfing the foamies on a regular surfboard. Being able to touch bottom after wiping out had a great psychological affect on me. I loved it. No deep water. I'm determined to SUP the ocean again. Xanex maybe? But for now I enjoyed surfing, watching everyone else tear it up on SUP boards, including my girlfriend and getting away from the winters chill.
Rachel absolutely loved the C4XXL iSup board and I'm super excited to try it out on our local rivers this Spring as I (no fault of the board, I tried every kind available on the beach) didn't do it justice on the mighty ocean.

The best place we found to hang out on the beach in Sayulita was at Patricia and Pablo's. They have a restaurant right on the beach with SUP and SURF rentals by the hour or day. A bucket of beer on ice is super cheap (cheapest on the Playa), the food is good and the views outstanding. Patricia runs the Surf side of things like rentals and lessons and her Husband runs the boats. He does fishing, snorkeling, whale watching trips. Both of there sons are Mexican National Surf Champs, so you can't go wrong with a lesson. Pablo and Patricia are good people. Look them up and say hi from me. Beers, Atom....

Winter kayak self support on the Lower Box, New Mexico

So with Northern New Mexico not getting much snow, It was time for a nice overnight trip down the class 2-3+(at flows of 600cfs) lower Box. The Lower Box is a great 15 mile wilderness run deep in a basalt gorge just west of Taos, NM. My friends Nate and Duke had never been on a kayak self support trip before and were amped to give it a try. We headed out Dec 10th, 2010. Although the 2 days were fairly warm, the night time temps were still getting down below freezing. So we packed tons of firewood, duralogs, food, beer, very warm sleeping bags and bivy's. Our kayaks probably weighed about 100lbs each. This was not a lightweight trip by any means. I was excited to just get away for a couple days and enjoy the beauty of the basalt canyon. We saw tons of Bighorn sheep. They were reintroduced to the area a couple years ago and are thriving. In our kayaks we were able to slowly drift by them as they were feeding. Pretty darn cool. This a great mellow run for a first time self support. The new Burn handled the tons of gear great. A must have in the winter time when kayaking is a good Drysuit. I slept in the fleece that I wore under the suit in the day, and I was totally dry. Helps in the event of a swim or rescue also. We had a fantastic time. Now I wish it would snow like crazy! happy New year. Beers, Atom....

kayaking and travelling in Mexico is dangerous (Narco Killers). So not true!!!!!

I have been traveling to Mexico to kayak since 1994. My last journey there was in 2007. It was time to go again. Everyone freaked out when I said I was going with a group of friends to a place we know well. Mexico is crazy right now they said, 28,000 killed since 2007, drug wars, epic gunfights between drug gangs, stupid to travel, you will be kidnapped, killed, tortured and never able to kayak again, get life insurance, blah blah....
Well, we had a blast (and we Drove from NM and had 4,000 miles total) and never saw anything that would make us question our travel decisions. Sure the Narco gangs are heavy down there and the killings are going on but just travel in the daytime and be respectful. We got bribed for 200 pesos by the cops (pay no more than that) and that was our only issue. For example, If you go to LA or NY in the USA, don't hit the bad parts of town. Same goes for Mexico.
We had a total blast and were one of 2 groups of Americans that seemed to make the trip by car. So go, have a blast, ignore the American media mass hysteria and huck some waterfalls..
We did a class 3-4 trip and it was O so good. Don't worry though, The same areas we hit have awesome class 5-5+ hucking. So go do it.....
When you make it to Ciudad Valles, look up Aaron Koch and Kayak Huasteca for all the local beta. The hotel that they base out off is great (on the main drag in Valles) and Aaron has the area dialed for the kayak info and is also getting the Mexico SUP scene activated. He is the man!
If you make it farther south to hit the famous Alseseca, stay at Adventurtec, they rock and have all kinds of good lodging. Give a hug to Tinker, Tormenta and Sheba for me (the local dogs).
Here are some photos I took. I am learning to to take photos and loving it. Mexico is not all about kayaking, enjoy the food, culture, people, roads or lack off and just go now and not be worried.

The 2nd annual, every man's Rio Grande multi-day kayak trip

The 1st annual, every man's Rio Grande multi-day kayak trip started last year in 2009. The Rio Grande in Northern New Mexico is an awesome multi day trip. From the Colorado Border to the Rio Arriba County line is 65 miles of class 2-5. The sections are, Ute Mountain (class 2), Razorblades (class 3-4), Upper Box (Class 4-5), La Hunta (class 2), Lower Box (class3-4), State Park (class 2), Racecourse (class 3). Last year we did the whole trip in 4 days and 4 nights. Full report on the first trip HERE. We had an absolute blast and when the time came again to do it this year, we had a few glitches. Joe was out, due to trying to build a house and and having a girlfriend hooked on Belly Dancing. Amos was in a new relationship and on a strict Vegan diet! (I didn't even ask him to partake, and yes they (as a couple) and his new diet are still together). Cougar Killer Cameron was needed badly for this second trip. He is a good buddy, but the main reason I needed him a second time around was because he stashed a large amount of booze in the basalt cliffs when he got lost for 30 hrs. Ya, he got lost for 30 hrs on class 2 and for some strange logic, stashed our entire supply of Booze. Please watch the video to fully understand!

Sooooo, I definitely need Cam Cam to show up for the trip. I called him and he was in. Amped! I also had done the Red River with this guy Murf a couple of days before. he had moved back to town after some time done in Colorado (not jail time) and I got him fired up for the multi day. So the night before our 2nd annual trip, Cameron leaves a voice-mail and bails on the trip. He mumbled something about a special seasonal hunting permit for Cougar opening up. So he flaked out once again and the hidden booze will be hidden for another year. And then it was just the Murf and I. Bottom line, this trip is an awesome multi day in the high desert for enjoying the scenery, epic camping, loaded boats, fires, drinking, good friendship and some good class 5 to deal with amongst it all. Note: Murf and I had a fantastic time and became great friends. This trip is frigging awesome! We did not pack light or simple. We went full on, all we could carry. Our kayaks for a 3 day trip weighed over 100 lbs. The 3rd annual will be next June. Please join us. How low is to low? Embudo in July....

Well, when you live at the takeout of the Embudo and it starts raining hard. The excitement starts to build. It has been bone dry down this way since June and everything has dried up good. I figured that If I could guide a raft down the Rio Grande Racecourse run at 250cfs, full of American sized tourists, then I sure as Keck could bounce a kayak down the Embudo at 50cfs. There were some big flash floods yesterday and the Embudo was raging, and I mean raging. So I woke up this morning and sauntered down my driveway for a look. Looked like a perfect mank flow of about 75cfs and the game was on. I called up my buddy Crow and we met up and fired the mank up. It was so manky that we ended up just doing the first canyon and then hiking out. Good times by all were had. While we were bashing our way down, I really was wishing that the Huckin Ducky mank master himself, Joe keck was around. He would have absolutely loved it. But on second thought, it probably was a wee tad to high for him. He probably would have swam in Long Rapid and I would have had to hike back in some other day and retrieve his kayak. You really need to be on it in these flows. Sorry Keck, gotta give ya a hard time now that you live in Texas. Way to rally down this year tons to run the stout. See ya this Spring, closest stuff to San Antonio :) Hope you enjoy the photos. Maybe with all this rain it will come up a lot more and we can mank it again,,,,Beers, Atom....

New Mexico SUPin

Northern New Mexico is going through the low water blues and I was itching to get on the water. My girlfriend Rachel and I have been wanting to get a couple SUP (Stand Up Paddle) boards for some time now. So now we had the perfect excuse. We live near a couple rivers and a bunch of lakes and were jonsin to try something new. So we bought a couple SurfTech SUP boards from CKS and hit the Lake right away. I bought the SurfTech 11'6 Soft Top Stand Up Paddle Board and Rach bought the 10'6 version. We also got a couple of the price-point KONA 2-Piece paddle SUP paddles. Sweet! Surf trunks and swimsuit and we hit the road. I'm loving the simplicity. We ended up at Heron lake and had a wonderful day. I'm hooked and going to take it on the river (very mellow section) tomorrow.

The SurfTech board is very stable and so easy to learn all the basics on. I did a 4 mile lap around the lake in no time and it was very fast and stable. We are going on a month long surf trip this winter and I am excited to see how it performs in the ocean. We will probably upgrade to a fancier Werner paddle before our trip, but for now the Kona's are fine. SUPin is also a super sick workout. Total core exercise. I'm feeling it as we speak. Bonus-our dogs loved cruising around on the boards :)

Budo fest 2010

The second annual "Budo Fest 2010" was an awesome event. I will go out on a limb and say that the Embudo race is the hardest class 5 race in the country. Northern New Mexico is the shit! The race starts at the normal put in and ends at my house just after the second canyon. 7 miles of full on class 4-5 kayaking. The format is a timed event. Teams of 3 race top to bottom without stopping. It is brutal. Not for the faint of heart. 3 teams competed this year and the winning time was around 43 minutes. I threw a kink into the event this year and 2nd and 3rd place were decided by this new twist. The teams had to take out at my house and run up to the porch (a couple 100 yards away) and then each team member had to slam an ice cold beer after racing the event. Lets just say that there was some serious up chucking and writhing on the ground while trying to finish the ice cold beers :)

3rd place honors got to Cutch, Rolf and Oliver

201 Mothers day kayaking the Upper Box...

This past Mothers Day I had the pleasure of kayaking the Upper Box in NM with some great folks. Ryan and Cari Mackey from Telluride area were first time Upper Boxers, Eric Parker from Durango was helping show them down and keeping the vides good and positive. Amos Hockmeyer from Taos had been a bunch of times before but still couldn't remember any of the rapids :)
and Ross Elgin, AKA "Rosa" was a good buddy of mine down from Salida. He had last done the run 20 yrs ago.
We had a mellow flow of 700 cfs. This is the Gauge to check, 450cfs would be the minimum to do the run and above 1000 cfs the run starts to have some POP! The rapids are pretty straight forward and not too pushy at these 700cfs flows. The sieves are in full force however and it is wise to set safety at NCO, Hellhole and Big Arsenic. So if the last time you ran the Upper Box was 20 yrs ago, you might be getting a bit on in years. Ross is pushing 60 (he's gonna kill me for that) and was super stressed out about the hike. I'm not really sure how he pulled it off, but he managed to get this lovely lady to help him carry his boat to the top of the arduous climb. We could not believe it! Gotta love it :)

pre-season Salt river trip

Living in NM, the Salt river in Arizona is an easy day drive away.
Not sure why I had never been on this river before, I was determined to get on it this year. After a hectic job working at the NM legislative session for 35 days straight, I rallied a few friends and we headed out to do a pre-permit wilderness run of the Salt. The key to doing a self support kayaking trip is to find a raft :)
Mike Pagel was kind enough to drive from Fort Collins (16 hr drive vs our 6 hr drive) and provide the raft support for us. It's hard seeing your good kayaking buddies become rafters, but after loading on all the food and beer, I wish more would convert.
The wilderness run of the salt is a 60 mile (including the day run) trip through beautiful canyons and spiky spiny scenery. I would rate it 9 out of 10 stars in terms of beauty. The whitewater is not bad either. Mostly class 3 with a couple 4's thrown in to keep you on your toes. I highly recommend this trip. Most folks do this trip in 4-6 days. We busted it out in two and a half in order to get home for work (some of us).
We had a great time, good friends and a special place.
I can't wait to go back and spend a more lesurily pace in this amazing place.
Permits are required after March 1st.

No permit needed before that, but all rules and regulations apply. You are on Apache land when you launch, please pay attention to the fees due there and where not to camp as long as you are on the reservation.

4 days & 4 nights, A kayaking self support, 65 miles-class 2-5

This June, Cameron, Joe, Amos and I did a 4 day self support kayak trip on the Rio Grande from the Colorado border to the county line below the Racecourse. 65 miles of class 2-5. Great times, 1 lost kayaker, lost whiskey, carnage, fishing and a trip that is etched in my memory of good times forever.
I had been wanting to do this trip for the last 10 years. I could never rope fellow boaters into it. I guess the concept of lots of class 2 and beautiful scenery didn't excite the "core" paddlers around. Luckily, I have some great bros that love kayaking regardless of the grade level and they joined me. We had flows of about 950cfs, tons of gear in our kayaks, a good attitude and actually paddled some whitewater during the trip. Sections that we kayaked were, Ute Mountain, Razorblades, Upper Box, la Hunta, Lower Box, State park, and Racecourse. I would recommend this 4 day self support trip to anyone that loves an adventure. We had an absolute blast. The wildlife was abundant, the scenery unbelievable, the winds way strong, and the whitewater was a blast. One of the best trips I have ever done. Oh ya, The Everest rules as a multi-day kayak. I think this trip will become an annual event. Stay tuned for next years episode and feel free to join us if you can break away from the "stout" for 4 days. It will do you good.

Upper Box Geezer Video

What do you have when you get 8 kayakers together and no one is under 40 yrs young? Well, we all affectionately named it the Geezer show. One fine Sunday morning, the 8 of us showed up to run the classic Upper Box in Northern New Mexico. It is a cool feeling to still paddle with folks that you have kayaked with over the last 15-20 years. There was about 150 yrs combined kayaking experience on the river this day. I have fond memories of meeting Chan at Tunnel falls on Gore in 1995, Svenny taking me down the Embudo and Upper Box in 1994, Marcia routing me down the Pueblo in 1996, Brett running the Embudo at 4.6ft in 1996, following William down the Embudo when he still C-1'd and watching him style everything. Kayaking creates friendships that last a lifetime. It was great to get together with this crew and have a fantastic day on the water. Everyone of these boaters has inspired me and shown me some incredible times. On and off the river.
This little video is for all the old schoolers still rocking it and for the newbies coming up. Kayaking for me is all about enjoying the river and the special places it takes you and the friendships generated along the way. Hope we can all do this again in another 20yrs. Cheers, Atom...

Embudo low flow-Junk show & Vertical Pin

Well the Embudo season has come and gone. We got on it a couple more times as the flows were dropping out. As you will see, there is a bad pin spot at the very bottom of the drop called MJ. Far river left on the last drop is a perfect pocket for a vertical pin. We were lucky that the paddler pinned during low flows, high flows would have made the pin very scary. So stay away from the far left wall when running this drop. And as most of you are well aware, always carry a rope when scouting. A rescue vest is also key when creeking. Be safe and aware out there this season. Cheers and enjoy the Junk Show.....

1st Annual "Budo Fest" Extreme kayak Race

The 1st Annual "Budo Fest" was awesome. The Embudo was Flowing a stout level and we had 2 teams for the race. Tons of folks hiked into the Slots to watch the teams come through the last section. Evan Ross, Tim Kelton and Rolf Kelly had a time of 40 minutes. Pretty awesome for a 7 mile class 5 run. Kyle McCutchen, Oliver Deschler and Luke Pennington had a time of 49 minutes. Huge props to these guys for entering the race. There was a raffle Saturday evening that raised $250.00 for American Whitewater, in our friend Mitchell Smiths name. The whole event went off without a hitch. A big shout out to Colorado Kayak Supply, Astral Bouyancy, Keen, Taos Mountain Outfitters,
Shred Ready and Lunch Video Magazine for supporting the event and donating prizes for the raffle. Local artist Lex Lucious made some cool trophies for the winners. John Grace from LVM brought out the Jumbo Tron and everyone dug the big screen and movies during the party.I'll be posting a longer report with photos soon. Here is a short video of the event. It is winter time down here in New Mexico. The mountains have snow but the lower valleys are getting toasty during the day. Perfect for some nice 60 degree weather to go boating in. The Rio Grande Racecourse section flows year round and some folks kayak it all winter. Today I was joined by Thad and Lisa. Thad has only been boating for 5 months and is the most fired up individual I have ever met about going boating. Lisa has been boating for awhile,and is just recovering from shoulder surgery. A mellow beautiful day with some minor mishaps (mental delusions), lay ahead...Oh ya, Nate also joined us. Were not to sure about this Nate guy....

I didn't capture the perfect roll demonstration by him right after this. I later asked him what his secret was to perfecting the roll in any situation. Especially this early in his kayak career. He said, Atom its really pretty simple, I'm terrified of sharks and so I just pretend that they are in every river I Kayak on. If I swim, I get eaten. So it makes me roll every time. Well an awesome day was had by all. I'm gonna end it with a plug for the NRS Toaster Mit. My hands are always freezing in the winter time (tried pogies and gloves-all of them). Tried these out today and was actually sweating. The paddle felt fine while wearing them. I'm sold using them for play runs and easier river running. I would not recommend them for creeking. Over and out. I'm off to Chile for 3 weeks where hopefully there are no crocs, sharks or aggressive cougars...

Pine Creek Virgin

So I was on my way to CKS for the weekend to demo some kayaks. Lake creek was at a silly low flow but Pine Creek was at a pretty healthy 700 cfs, I figured I better man up and hit that S*#t! So I called around to my "posse" but I got nary a response back. I understand that my crew is sometimes scared to fire it up with me, but hellfire, this is Pine Creek boys! Just then, my good friend Marjolicious called and since she had never fired up the "Pine" she was all "excited" and "excited" to do it. There was one glitch, She was boating with the Girls tomorrow and I had to meet them first before I could rally with there crew. I guess to see if I was cool enough or something.
Well Marjolicious made me meet them at Benson's in Salida the night before and introduce myself. She mentioned that her crew was pretty cool, but that I had to really impress one of them in particular. I guess their friend is kinda shy, reserved and quiet. she wasn't really accepting of some new guy joining the posse. So after a couple of the best beer I do love, I strolled on over and had my work cut out for me.

Marjolicious expressing concern that I would only mother duckie them down to just above the hole. Since Pine Creek was running at such a high level, I thought it would be my best interest to get out above the hole and direct them through the last couple moves with a Megaphone while my buddy Atom shot photos from the rim.

I'm not privy to what was said during the team meeting, but i think it was something like "I gotta Pee".

So just when we got all fired up to fire up the "Pine" someone from Salida had to come on down and get a beatdown in front of us. "uncool Holrider". Hot Dam!

So We gotta mention for the sake of safety, It is best when you art da rope handler, to position yourself at river level, not 10ft up on a boulder. This can cause a Super Man effect on ones person when said swimmer grabs hold of the rope and you suddenly become airborne. Just a friendly safety tip!

As we pull out of the eddy above "pine" rapid, Marjolicious says to me, "heartbreak is a bitch" I say aahhhh, ya, okay, so? She replies, you know what is worse than heartbreak? I say, not having any cold beer? No she replies, catching on fire while barbecuing. Nuff said. We enter the rapid. That's me in front before I get out above moonpie to direct the ladies.

Okay, now we can get to the true reason of the Salida boys swim. He was on line, but he happened to glance left while coming down the tongue above moonpie. He was greeted with this shot of Gretsum setting safety near the hole. Yup, true story!

The real reason why Marjolicious and Kateclaw went into monnpie hole. They also glanced to thier left and saw--Yup, Atom and I found some lovely ladies just chilling on river left. They had beer.

The Posse at the take out. Thanks ladies, I had an awesome time and if anyone ever gets a chance to meet and paddle with this great crew, they are awesome, fun, sexy and a total blast to be with and they fire it up in all aspects! Oh ya, they feel naked with out this.

Roam, a new film by the directors of the "Collective" is now out. I know this has nothing to do with kayaking but the filming is incredible. I think it is the most innovative style I have ever seen for action sports. It definitely got me thinking about how I could apply these techniques to my kayaking vids. Enjoy.

Spring is in the air. On Saturday march 10th, I met seven Colorado boaters for a run on the Upper Box in New Mexico. It was flowing around 500 cfs and it felt like Spring, the wind was blowing and we were all coming off the couch. Time to shake the rust. It was a great warm up run for start of the season. I took a few shots for ya all. Sorry about the haphazard quality but all I had was my point and shoot and it was cold.
The crew was Evan, Mike, Pete, Leigf?, Trevor, Junior, Randy and myself.

Something south for everyone
This is the time of year that folks start digging out the ski gear. It is starting to get cold and the local rivers and creeks have started to go into hibernation. A few runs like Gore, baileys, shoshone and the upper box are still flowing, but ski mode is in the air. When this happens, I begin to dream about Mexico. A lot of kayakers head south for the winter. Going to Costa Rica, Belize, Ecuador, Chile and a ton more places. For me, Mexico is the closest and the cheapest. My friends and I can leave Santa Fe, NM on a Friday morning and be running some fun drops Sat afternoon. The best part about Mexico is that it has runs for everyone. You can be a class 3 boater and have a blast. Or you can be a hardcore creeker and find some amazing stuff. Folks on Mountain Buzz have been chatting about Mexico, So I thought I would post a couple of videos of the Cascados Micos and the Salto. These runs are just about having a blast and having everyone enjoy them. I stand by the saying that "Kayaking in Mexico is for everyone"! Adios, Atom...

If you end up heading to Mexico, I recommend getting some good dry pants to keep the bugs of off your winter legs. The bugs are bad if you head for Vera Cruz and the pants also protect ya from the Mexican Jungle.

UPPER BOX Oct 28th 2006

This past Winter and Spring, New Mexico had one of the worst droughts in history. It sucked. No skiing equals no boating and no boating equals "Hell". So it has been a pleasant suprise that the Rio Grande has been flowing this Fall. The playboating has been good and the Upper Box is IN! This saturday I headed to the Upper with Tim Kelton, Ed Lucero and Steve White. There was a bit of snow on the ground but the temps were around 60 degrees and the flow was a low, but very fun 500cfs. We put on about 1.30pm and were done at 5.30pm, this included the hike down and out, with a few scouts along the way and one minor boat extraction. I would have to say that it was one of my favorite days on the Upper ever.

Ed making the move Hell Hole. At this level the landing has a nasty seam that wants to flip you and send ya upside down into the river left sieve. upon landing, Ed was buried to his helmet, resurfaced and made the move right.

Since we have had a non existent year for creeking, we decided to hit the Upper Box when it came up to a boatable flow.

Had to get a new car with the price of gas these days. Toyota 2007 Yaris sedan. 35-40mpg fully loaded. Love it.

This weekend I headed out to Colorado to see Oh Be Joyfulllll. I couldn't boat due to a pulled back but I thought that I would head out of town anyway. Had a blast camping out with a bunch of folks. Met Freemont from Golden at the takeout for OBJ. He fired the run up a couple times. It was pretty darn low, but a ton of folks were there. I didn't get any shots of Freemont running the drops, seems that he was so fired up to hike his boat that he ended up on top of the pass. Got a few shots of Boyd from Tenn, he was running it solo while his girlfriend took vid and stills. He had it made. I managed to get some dirtbiking in with Freemont while on painkillers, probably not recommended but still a blast and probably safer than creeking on them. Blazed the bikes up to the headwaters of Daisy creek. Super sick slide way up there. Nice to see snow still. On a side note, my friend M###o had her 38th birtday that weekend and rumor has it she got to stay warm with a guy 10yrs younger. Way to go. Oh ya, it was high comedy watching the drunk folks crossing the Slate river in there 4x4's ond getting stuck. One guy did it at 3 in the am and woke everybody up in camp by yelling and screaming, good fun dumb stuff.

So we were waiting for the brazos to come down enough to be runnable and decided to scout a run in the area. The Gazzater was busted out and we found a creek that looked pretty steep. After miles of dirt roads we found the canyon and started the hike down. This run is steep, the photos don't do it justice. We figured it dropped about 1800 ft per mile. We were gonna hike our boats down and just put on. I'm glad we didn't. It's still there, waiting for someone to fire it up. 10ft's, 20ftr's, 30 ftr's with no eddys for a solid mile. Hint, first 4 letters are BEAV and it feeds into the Toltec Gorge on the New Mexico side. Props to Jesse King for finding this one. Lots of other potential in this area as well.

The Trampas enters the Embudo on the left just after MJ falls.
For the past 10 yrs I had been looking up at this tiny confluence
as we blazed by on our way down the Embudo. It enters the Embudo
via a 20 ft slide. The spring of 05 brought huge snow pack to New
Mexico and The Embudo was flowing Huge. One sunny day we stopped
and looked up at the Trampas confluence and thought that there might
just be enough water to run it. So TK and I dug out the Topos, drove around
for hours and found the putin. Which consisted of a small forgotten town
(which will remain unnamed) with alot of dogs and some wacked people
still stuck in the 60's. We came back the next day with Dunbar and
a few more Colorado folks. The run was low, probably 60 cfs or so.
We launched after warnings from 60's hippy about rants of it being to steep
and that if we went onto river left we we goners. (we took this to mean, getting
shot due to a certain "vegatable crop growing") Well we made it past all the
brush and barbed wire to the entrance of the canyon. All I can say is, the run
was bony, hardly any eddy's, (which was a factor with 6 people) really manky
drops, a couple steller ones and I'll probably never do it again. Sure was fun
though when we finally made it to the Embudo and it was a Thumping 3.6ft.
But that's what you go through to figure out if a creek is any good.
